February 16th, 1918 marks the Act of Reinstating Independence of Lithuania. On that day the Council of Lithuania proclaimed the restoration of an independent State of Lithuania, governed by democratic principles based on freedom, equality, and prosperity.
March 11th, 1990 marks the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania. On that day the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania declared its independence from the Soviet Socialist Republics. The act emphasized restoration and legal continuity of the interwar-period Lithuania, which was occupied by the USSR and lost independence in June 1940. It was the first time that a Union Republic declared independence from the dissolving Soviet Union.
March 10, 2018 Lithuanian organizations throughout the world were celebrating the February 16, 1918 centennial event. The biggest event in San Diego celebrating this important date was a commemoration/concert. The program included:
- Keynote speaker Darius Gaidys, Consul General of Lithuania in Los Angeles,
- "Bernardas Brazdžionis" Lithuanian Saturday School students singing and playing the Baltic zither, and
- Lithuanian men's singing ensemble "Tolimi Aidai" from Los Angeles.
March 11, 2017 Featured was the award-winning 2015 Lithuanian film “How We Played the Revolution” (‘Kaip mes žaidėme revoliuciją’) with English subtitles. The film presents the rock group Antis’ influence in the independence struggle. Film was followed by Lithuanian food (blynai, kugelis, pyragai), wine, Lithuanian music and dancing.
